1 〔時刻･時期が〕 late; tardy; (遅刻して) behind time [schedule]; (遅まきの) belated.

●もう時刻が遅いよ. It's (already) late. | It's getting late. | 《口》 Look at the time!

・もうこんなに遅いとは思わなかった. I had no idea it was so late.

・あの人はいつも来るのが遅い. He always comes late.

・夫はいつも帰りが遅い. My husband always gets home [back] late.

・帰りの遅いときは電話しなさい. When you are going to be (back) late, telephone.

・今から出かけてももう遅い. It's too late to set out now.

・「タクシーを呼んでくれ」「もう遅いよ. とても間に合わないね」 “Call a taxi.”―“It's too late now. We'll never make it.”

・今からでも遅くはない. It's still not too late. | There's still time.

2 〔速度･テンポ･反応が〕 slow.

●進歩が遅い be slow; make slow progress; lag behind

・頭の回転が遅い be slow(-witted) [slow on the uptake]; be dim(-witted); not be very bright

・足が遅い be a slow walker; be slow-footed; be slow of foot.

●各駅停車の遅い電車では着くのは夜になるね. If we go by the slow local train we'll get there at night, right?

・彼は実に仕事が遅い. He's a terribly slow worker. | His work is dreadfully slow. | He does work slowly.

・前の車が遅いので, 後ろが詰まってしまった. The car in front was slow [going slowly] so traffic piled up behind it.

・この電車は遅くていらいらするね. This train is frustratingly [irritatingly] slow, isn't it.

・返事が遅い! Answer! | Hurry up and answer!

遅きに失する be [come] too late (to be of use).

●ダイオキシン放出の規制は遅きに失した. The regulation of dioxin emissions came too late.
